ADHD Assessment
A dedicated diagnostic service for adults who may be experiencing symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Who should consider an ADHD assessment?
You may benefit from an ADHD assessment if you have long-standing difficulties that affect your daily life, work, or education. Many adults seek assessment after recognising patterns that have been present since childhood but only recently became more noticeable.
Common reasons people seek assessment include:
- Ongoing difficulty concentrating
- Poor organisation and time management
- Restlessness or feeling internally “driven”
- Frequent forgetfulness
- Impulsivity in decisions or communication
- Chronic procrastination and difficulty starting tasks
These experiences can affect academic performance, employment stability, relationships, and self-esteem.
Common adult presentations of ADHD
ADHD in adults does not always look like hyperactivity. Many individuals present with subtle but persistent executive functioning difficulties.
You may notice:
- Difficulty sustaining attention during tasks or conversations
- Losing track of time or deadlines
- Starting multiple tasks but struggling to complete them
- Feeling mentally overwhelmed by planning or organisation
- Emotional impulsivity or frustration
- A tendency to hyperfocus on specific interests while neglecting others
- Restlessness, either physical or internal
ADHD can vary widely between individuals and may coexist with other neurodevelopmental or mental health conditions.
What the assessment includes
Our ADHD assessment is a structured clinical process designed to meet recognised diagnostic standards, including guidance from NICE ADHD Guideline NG87.
Your assessment may include:
- A comprehensive clinical interview
- Developmental history (childhood and schooling experiences)
- Use of validated ADHD assessment tools and rating scales
- Review of supporting information where appropriate (e.g. school reports, GP records, or informant feedback)
- Differential diagnosis to consider other possible explanations
- Diagnostic formulation based on clinical evidence
- A detailed written report with findings and recommendations
Duration of the assessment
The full assessment process typically involves approximately 2 to 3 hours of clinician time, which may be divided across stages.
This includes:
- Pre-assessment questionnaires completed at home
- Collateral history (where available and appropriate)
- Clinical interview with a specialist clinician
- In-depth diagnostic evaluation and formulation
Additional time may be required for review of external information.
What happens afterwards?
Following completion of your assessment, you will receive a clear clinical outcome.
If diagnostic criteria are met, you will receive:
- A formal diagnosis (where appropriate)
- A comprehensive written clinical report
- Individualised recommendations for support and management
Your report can be shared (with your consent) with:
- Your GP
- Employers (for workplace adjustments)
- Educational institutions
Treatment and medication
Insight Neurodevelopment Clinic provides diagnostic assessment only.
We do not provide:
